What is Giving Tuesday?
As Thanksgiving 2020 approaches, gratitude can be shown in multiple ways. One of the ways to give back this year is through Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that aims to help communities around the world. Started in 2012, the movement continues with one goal: dedicate one day to encourage people to do good. This year, Giving Tuesday is on December 1, soon after Thanksgiving. This year’s Thanksgiving is especially important as many workers are still struggling amidst the pandemic while the shortage of PPE continues.
Started in 2012, Giving Tuesday has raised $1.5 billion for charities across eight annual Tuesdays. The movement has helped fundraise for a variety of causes such as human services, education, health, and the environment. In addition to fundraising, users from around the world supported Giving Tuesday in droves. In 2019, there were more than 20 billion social media impressions, with #GivingTuesday trending as a topic on that day.
Get Us PPE on Giving Tuesday
Frontline workers are still in need of PPE just as they were in March. With far-reaching needs for PPE across the country, Get Us PPE has joined the Giving Tuesday movement to expand assistance for life-saving provisions to protect communities most in need. As of September, 21.5 million PPE units were requested to Get Us PPE from facilities across the nation. Concerningly,
with coronavirus cases nearly reaching 11 million in the US, the PPE shortage is likely to continue. With the reopening of schools and small businesses, Get Us PPE has received 90% of requests from nursing homes, homeless shelters, health clinics, and non-hospital facilities.
Get Us PPE’s goal to provide equitable access for facilities to PPE across the country falls in line with Giving Tuesday’s goal of spreading kindness and gratitude. These past months, it has focused on providing basic PPE to new groups like teachers, school administrators, small businesses, and continued to provide for healthcare and essential workers.
Get Us PPE’s Goal
This Giving Tuesday, Get Us PPE is prioritizing providing PPE for monetary donations. The organization aims to raise $100,000 between December 1 until the end of the year. Any amount of donations, whether small or big, can make a difference to the wide variety of people who are in need of fundamental PPE like masks and gloves.
Unsurprisingly, the PPE needs of facilities en masse are large. Here’s a breakdown of costs:
- A surgical mask costs $1
- A pair of gloves cost $0.50
- A gowns costs $4
- A KN95 mask cost $3
- A N95 mask costs $5
How can donations like yours make an impact?
- $500 would supply 100 school nurses with N95 masks.
- $750 would supply 500 sanitation workers with surgical masks and nitrile gloves.
- $1000 would supply a hospital with 250 gowns.
- $5000 would supply a nursing home with PPE for one month.
- $22,500 would supply a medium-sized facility with gowns and N95 masks.
In the next few weeks, you’ll see Get Us PPE mentioning Giving Tuesday across all social media platforms.
We know this Giving Tuesday, the pandemic will not be over. However, donating here to participate in Get Us PPE’s Giving Tuesday is the best way to show your gratitude and kindness to our pivotal frontline workers this Thanksgiving. Any donation can help make a big impact to the health and safety of our communities during this pandemic.
